Murl Hendrickson holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Colorado. He is completing his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification — currently working as an Associate Financial Representative to fulfill the supervised-hours requirement the credential demands.

That combination — economic theory grounded in hands-on financial planning practice — is directly relevant to what the Jefferson County Treasurer actually does every day: managing a $1.3 billion investment portfolio, optimizing returns within statutory constraints, and making deposit decisions that are purely about safety and yield.

Most county treasurers come from political backgrounds. Murl comes from a financial one. The difference matters when the portfolio is over a billion dollars.

Why this office, why now

The 2026 Jefferson County Treasurer's race presents a specific problem that Murl believes voters should understand clearly: at least one candidate in this race has publicly stated a goal of using county deposit placement — where the county's cash sits and earns interest — as a lever to pressure banks into preferred lending practices.

That is not a fringe interpretation. It's a stated platform position. And it directly conflicts with Colorado law. C.R.S. § 24-75-601 requires public treasurers to prioritize safety and return when making deposit decisions. Political alignment is not a factor the statute recognizes.

Murl is running because someone who understands fiduciary duty — and will uphold it without exception — needs to be in this race.

The LP connection

Murl is running on the Libertarian Party ballot line because the LP's core commitment to limited government and fiscal responsibility aligns with what the treasurer's role actually requires. This is a fiscal management office. It has no business being a platform for social policy, and the LP has no interest in making it one.

The Libertarian Party of Jefferson County is not asking Murl to run on ideology. They're asking him to run on competence. That's the offer voters are getting.

Manage the portfolio to statute

C.R.S. § 24-75-601 defines the criteria: safety, then return. Every deposit and investment decision will be made on those grounds. No political considerations, no preferred institutions, no exceptions.

Publish plain-language reports

Quarterly investment summaries will be written for taxpayers, not accountants. Where the money is. What it's earning. Why. In language you don't need a degree to understand.

Run tax administration consistently

Property tax collection, billing, and lien administration will be conducted by the same standards for every taxpayer. No exceptions for politically connected interests, no selective enforcement.

Keep the office focused on its mandate

The treasurer collects taxes, manages investments, and maintains financial records. That's the whole job. Murl won't expand it, reinterpret it, or use it as leverage for anything it isn't.
